GHD/EMPHNET Supports Iraq Ministry of Health in Launching Appreciative Inquiry Field Activities

The Appreciative Inquiry (AI) initiative is an innovative modality designed to improve vaccination coverage at all levels within a health care system. The initiative achieves this purpose through coordinating with development partners and local authorities for its implementation.

 

During the period August 6-8, 2018, EMPHNET organized a training of trainers (ToT) workshop as part of an AI project in Baghdad. The AI initiative is designed to respond to the need to reach full immunization targets in selected geographic areas in Iraq through identifying coverage gaps and responding to accessibility challenges.

 

The workshop was convened under the auspices of the Iraqi Ministry of Health (MoH) with the participation of thirty health promotion and immunization officers, education and endowment officials and representatives from civil society organizations from the central, provincial and district levels. The workshop was attended by directors of Primary Health Care and Health Promotion divisions and the deputy manager of the expanded program on immunization (EPI) in Iraq.

 

During the three-day event, participants discussed the ownership of the full immunization initiative by the local communities and redefining their role in planning, implementation and evaluation of the project in coordination with the health facilities in the targeted areas.

 

To ensure that this goal is achieved the ToT was followed by district level training workshops that were held during August 12-15, 2018. These workshops were designed to ensure the full engagement of targeted communities and relevant sectors in two selected districts within the Babylon and Karbala provinces. The training workshop took place in Al Hurr District in Karbala Province and Al Mahaweel District in Babylon Province.

 

Based on the consultative meetings with the Health Promotion Department and Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) Unit at central, governorate, and district levels, district level participants developed operational plans for implementing the AI strategy.

 

Communications with Iraqi MoH continues to plan for next steps to implement the full immunization initiative.
