GHD/EMPHNET Supports Training in Afghanistan on Supportive Supervision, Monitoring and Data Management

GHD/EMPHNET, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is supporting Afghanistan Ministry of Public Health in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). This support is offered in the areas of supportive supervision as well as monitoring and data management at national and provincial levels. The need for such support has been crucial, as EPI supervisors in provinces across the country are faced with daily challenges that hinder proper supervision and monitoring of the EPI program at the field level. Such support will ultimately ensure that the immunization program follows its objectives and provides evidence and indicators for decision-makers. As part of its support, GHD| EMPHNET conducted a training on supportive supervision for provincial supervisors located in the eastern zone of Afghanistan: from the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar. Furthermore, EPI supervisors, provincial EPI team members and data quality officers, from the government WHO, UNICEF, and other NGOs also participated in this training. The 3rd batch was for Nangarhar and Kunar provincial EPI teams and organized from Sep 29 to 1st Oct, 2018 for 20 technical staff. Participants were trained on how to plan and conduct supportive supervision within their EPI centers based on data analysis. They also received training on how to solve staff and program problems during their supervision visits. They were also trained on motivating the health facility staff, and identifying those health facilities which were not visited in the past one quarter or one year and conduct supervision. Similar workshops were conducted July and August (as part of the overall three batches of Supportive Supervision trainings for 7 provinces: The first training was for three provinces (Kabul, Parwan and Khost) EPI teams organized from 07-09, July 2018 and the total participants were 13 technical staff. The second training was organized from 28-30 August, 2018, for two provinces (Balkh and Samangan) EPI staff and the total participants were 12 technical staff.
