Iraq Ministry of Health Concludes Second Workshop of the Public Health Empowerment Program – Surveillance for Polio Officers

The Iraq Ministry of Health (MoH), supported by GHD|EMPHNET, conducted the second training workshop for the Public Health Empowerment Program – Surveillance for Polio Officers (PHEP – SPO).

 

Held in Basra between June 24 to July 5, 2018, the training targeted the PHEP – SPO’s second cohort which comprises 30 district polio surveillance officers from the Basra, Thi-Qar, Misan and Wasit provinces.

 

The workshop provided participants with the necessary technical and practical knowledge and skills they need to conduct disease outbreak investigations. The sessions focused on enabling participants to find out epidemiologic clues needed to deliberate an outbreak, create a line list, and link with laboratories during outbreaks. Other sessions shed light on areas of public health emergency management, with discussions highlighting essential health indicators during emergencies, the role of rapid response teams, risk communication, and problem analysis.

 

Prior to theses sessions, participants presented the reports and the tasks assigned to them during the first workshop, which they attended on April 8 - 12, 2018, as part of their enrollment in the program.

 

The PHEP-SPO is a three-month, in-service program that focuses on detection of and response to diseases and events of public health importance or national and international concern. Through didactic and in-service training, participants learn, and practice fundamental skills used in surveillance, outbreak investigation and basic management. The didactic instruction as well as the field assignments are directly linked to the Ministry of Health goals for improvement in surveillance and outbreak response.
