Iraq MoH and GHD/EMPHNET Collaborate to Enhance Brucellosis Surveillance, Diagnosis, and Control

Comprising members from the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), and GHD| EMPHNET, the Iraq Brucellosis Steering Committee is currently implementing a project to strengthen the surveillance, diagnosis, and control of brucellosis in the country. The project is introducing  new diagnostic techniques such as ELISA and PCR to study the epidemiology of the disease and enhance prevention measures in the country.

 

The Committee met on July 22, 2018, in Baghdad. The meeting was held to introduce the project to the committee members, and to discuss the achievements of the first and second phases of the project as well as the activities to be implemented in the coming months within the third phase of the project.

 

The first phase targeted the provinces of Babil and Diayla, while the second phase targeted the provinces of Maysan and Wasit. Within these phases, GHD| EMPHNET, the MoH and the MoA, conducted training workshops on brucellosis testing. The workshops targeted clinicians and laboratory technicians working within the afore-mentioned provinces., focusing on enhancing their capacities in brucellosis diagnosis.

 

An important outcome of the meeting was the agreement on upcoming activities. Specifically, committee members agreed on incorporating new districts within capacity building activities for Maysan and Wasit and to include the hospitals and the private sector in the targeted training workshops. They also agreed on initiating health promotion activities within all provinces of the country.
