Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and GHD/EMPHNET Conclude Training on Epidemiological Surveillance of Brucellosis in Islamabad

Supported by GHD| EMPHNET, the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) conducted the first workshop as part of a project titled Enhancing Brucellosis Surveillance in Pakistan.

 

This training workshop took place between July 31 and August 2, 2018 in Islamabad. It was commenced under the patronage of the PARC’s Chairman Dr. Yusuf Zafar who attended the opening sessions along with members from PARC and NARC. These sessions were facilitated by experts from these institutions and GHD| EMPHNET.

 

The training targeted fifteen veterinarians and para veterinarians currently working in clinics and hospitals in Tarlai and Sohan districts in Islamabad. These districts were selected in collaboration with Pakistani experts as sentinel sites to be implemented within the activities of the project. The training workshop focused on enhancing the participants’ capacities in disease surveillance, sample collection, and diagnosis of animal diseases at the farm level.

 

The training was held at the NARC premises as well as animal farms. The didactic sessions focused on the clinical signs of brucellosis in both humans and animals, diagnosis and treatment of the disease, its epidemiology at the local, regional, and international levels, and brucellosis control strategies used worldwide. Furthermore, facilitators presented on public health surveillance, sampling protocol, and the implementation timeline of the project activities.

 

A practical training on veterinary brucellosis surveillance also took place. Participants in this training visited a cattle farm and were trained on bulk milk sample collection. They transferred fresh milk in an ice box to the laboratory, and they applied the Ring Test MRT to test the samples for brucellosis.

 

Furthermore, the participants applied the Rose Bengal test on animal blood samples they took from sheep and goat farms, and they were also trained on transferring blood samples for testing to the laboratory.
