The Iraq Ministry of Health and GHD/EMPHNET Collaborate to Strengthen Routine Immunization in Liberated and High-Risk Provinces

A microplan is an important tool to reach and vaccinate every child everywhere in the community, and it is thus essential to improve the coverage of routine immunization. Microplanning involves mapping the communities in the health center catchment area, identifying and planning special activities for hard to reach populations, as well as monitoring gaps and defaulters.

To strengthen the performance of routine immunization activities in Iraq with a particular focus on the newly liberated and high risks provinces and districts, improving microplans are needed, especially ones developed for the health centers by the health workers themselves.

Within this context, the Iraq Ministry of Health (MoH), with support from GHD| EMPHNET adopted a capacity building approach targeting health workers at all levels. Activities to support this initiative commenced by training workshops for the staff working within the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at district and health facilities in selected provinces.

Seven provinces were jointly selected by Iraqi MoH and GHD| EMPHNET to be targeted in the microplanning for routine immunization training. The main objective of the training is to strengthen the capacity of EPI staff in microplanning for routine immunization and to develop quality microplans for routine immunization.

Approximately 850 EPI staff will be trained from 42 districts. They will be trained within 40 workshops. Nine Workshops will be conducted in ten districts within Baghdad Al-kerkh. Eight workshops will be conducted in Thi_Qar, and four workshops will be held in each of Kerbala, Muthana and Diwaniya. Furthermore, six workshops will be held in Wasit and six workshops will be held in Dyala. Almost half of the workshops were completed in Baghdad-Al- kerkh and Diwaneya, while the workshop in Thi Qar started as well.

Workshop facilitators included trainees who had participated in the  ToT refresher training  that took place in March 2018.

The training design composed three days: classroom training for the first two days. Following this component, a task was given to participants during which they were required to develop the Primary Health Centers (PHCs) microplans. After one week, the participants return to the classroom for the 3rd day to present their microplans.

The microplans are reviewed by the facilitators using a wrap-up check list. At the end of the wrap-up, the EPI manger and district EPI focal point is responsible to send feedback to the PHCs to improve the microplans quality.
