Bangladesh Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians Organizes Introductory Training Course

The Department of Livestock Services, Bangladesh (DLS) at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL) and One Health Institute (OHI) of Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) organized an introductory training course for the Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (FETPV) between February 14-24, 2019.

 

Supported by GHD|EMPHNET and taking place in Dhaka, the course targeted ten government veterinarians out of which six will be shortlisted and selected to be members of the FETPV. Dr. Abdul Jabbar Sikder, Director General of the DLS Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock attended in the inaugural session; while Prof. Dr. Goutam Buddha Das, Vice Chancellor of CVASU was present in the concluding session.

 

Throughout the ten-day course, sessions focused on the basics of epidemiology, outbreak investigation, and disease surveillance. To complement theory with practice, a field trip was organized and lead by the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD). Taking place in a nearby community, the trip focused to orient participants on participatory disease searching strategy.

 

The course was facilitated by multidisciplinary tutors from various organizations: FAO ECTAD, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), icddrb, CVASU, Bangladesh Agricultural University BAU, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, among others. Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour, GHD|EMPHNET’s Executive Director, joined in the concluding session to share his thoughts and show GHD|EMPHNET’s support for the FETP-V.

 

Following this course, the FETP-V selection committee will select six participants out of the ten who participated in this course to join the two-year advanced FETPV.

 

Established in 2019 as a two-year program, the Bangladesh FETPV Bangladesh aims to develop applied skills and knowledge of the government veterinary workforce to deal with trans-boundary and emerging diseases under a One Health approach.
