EMPHNET Holds First Steering Committee Meeting for Brucellosis Surveillance Project in Jordan

Brucellosis remains a major public health concern in several countries across the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Jordan is among countries where the disease is still endemic, constituting another burden on the already stressed health and economic situation. Since 2016, EMPHNET has worked closely with multiple sectors in Jordan to improve brucellosis surveillance, diagnosis, and control. At the regional level, the organization is implementing similar projects in Iraq, and it has collaborated with partners in Pakistan towards strengthening enhancing brucellosis surveillance. Within these collaborations, EMPHNET promotes the One Health approach towards supporting the global health security agenda.

 

Currently, EMPHNET is supporting adoption of the One Health approach to prevent and control brucellosis in Jordan in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Princess Haya Biotechnology Center, and the Royal Medial Services. These collaborative efforts are within a project to enhance laboratory-based surveillance of this disease in humans and animals. The project is now piloted in three governorates of high-endemicity of brucellosis: Amman (Eastern area), Karak, and Al-Mafraq. The project seeks to create a better understanding of the disease through such surveillance in the way to strengthen the culture of biosecurity and biosafety among public health professionals and laboratory workers.

 

On June 25, 2019, the project steering committee held its first meeting at EMPHNET headquarters in Amman. The committee membership includes public health professionals and experts on infectious diseases from the afore-mentioned entities, alongside representatives from academia and the private sector. In this meeting, the steering committee proposed training activities to be implemented at the peripheral, central, and nationwide levels. It also discussed issues relevant to the project implementation: tests used in the surveillance of brucellosis as well as data collection and entry for the project’s database.
