EMPHNET Participates in Workshop on Data collection and Analytics in Humanitarian Health Emergencies and Outbreaks

The R Epidemics Consortium (RECON), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Emergency, the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST), Epidemic Data Kit (LSHTM-EDK), and Wellcome Trust organized a workshop under the title “Data collection and Analytics in Humanitarian Health Emergencies and Outbreaks.” The workshop was held at the Wellcome Trust in London From March 20- 22, 2019.

 

The workshop’s participants included representatives from TEPHINET, EMPHNET, AFENET, the CDC, the WHO, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, the International Committee of the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), and others representing operational stakeholders in the field of global health. Participants emphasized the necessity of collaboration to share knowledge and experience in order to develop and improve data collection and analysis during humanitarian health emergencies and outbreaks.

 

The key output of the workshop was a collective strategic roadmap for the field of data analytics in humanitarian health emergencies and outbreaks. On the first day of the workshop, EMPHNET’s representative gave a presentation on “Data Collection in Areas of Conflict,” explaining the challenges that public health professionals including Field Epidemiology Training Programs' (FETPs) graduates face in the areas of conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). The representative also explained the role of EMPHNET in supporting those professionals educationally, technically, and logistically to overcome these challenges. In addition, he shared the EMPHNET experience in many conflict-ridden countries in the region and the barriers faced in responding to the health events in these countries.
