EMPHNET Supports Iraq FETP Implementation and Mentors Workshop

The Iraq Ministry of Health (MoH) conducted an implementation workshop for the Iraq Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) between September 27 – 28, 2019, followed by a mentorship training workshop between September 29 and October 1. Taking place in Muscat, Oman, both workshops were supported by the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and GHD/EMPHNET.

During the implementation workshop, participants discussed the roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders, including the CDC, the MoH, and the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA). In addition, participants explored various areas for strengthening the Iraq FETP such as providing support investigation and response activities, creating research opportunities for the residents, among others.

In the mentors’ workshop, facilitators held practical sessions to highlight characteristics of good mentorship practices. The workshop targeted twenty-five mentors representing most provinces of Iraq: Al-Muthanna, Baghdad, Karbala, Kirkuk, Ninawa, Salahuddin, Thi Qar, and Wasit.

The Iraq FETP was established in 2009 as a two-year postgraduate program. The Iraq FETP focuses on strengthening the national public health workforce in response to priority health problems, use of evidence-based data for decision making, communication of epidemiologic information, and evaluation of surveillance systems.

Since 2009, EMPHNET has supported the Iraq FETP residents and graduates in capacity building, focusing on areas that serve Iraq’s priority health issues.
