EMR FETPs Participate in Tenth Global Scientific Conference

TEPHINET held its Tenth Global Scientific Conference in Georgia, Atlanta, Between October 28 to November 2, 2019. The conference plays a crucial role in increasing global health security by improving country capacity to detect and respond to disease outbreaks and other public health threats.

 

The conference serves as the premier global venue for FETP trainees and graduates, the “boots on the ground” in the fight against diseases, to share their work with international public health experts. The conference theme is “The Global FETP Enterprise: Applied Epidemiology in the 21st Century."


The event was attended by 600 participants with 35 from the EMR region to show their achievements. Each participant presented their work with an oral and poster presentation. Furthermore, with the participation of the activities, two FETP directors were engaged with the TEPHINET accreditation workshop and one FETP director was engaged in learning Advisory Council (FLAC).

 

The objective of the conference was to create a platform for Epidemiologists and Public Health physicians to share their scientific works with the larger audience, provide residents and graduates of the program a forum to share their findings from their field-based activities, provide a training opportunity for the trainees on different topics through interactive learning sessions, to provide an opportunity for epidemiological networking and partnership, and to create a forum to discuss pertinent public health issues.

 

In the preconference workshop or Interactive Learning Sessions (ILS), 10 topics were discussed that focused on tools and analytics of data and making maps, (Analytics using R, Go. Data, and Qualitative methods.)

 

In the opening ceremony of the Conference, Dr. Carl Reddy TEPHINET director, welcomed the participants, and quoted “ There is clear increase and commitment across the world to the one health paradigm leading to improve cross sectoral coordination and collaboration among epidemiologist, veterinarians and environmentalist we are at the crossroad of entire FETP enterprise”

 

Also, Jeffrey Koplan, Vice president for Global Health Emory University shared his experiences in different position. He mentioned to the support and sustainability of the FETP mentioned 3Key elements, relevance, evaluation and engagement needs of the data and stories sharing, knowledge and experience, and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (video remarks), outlined 5 key priorities for the organization: Universal health coverage, Health emergencies, Women children and adolescent health, health impact of climates and environmental change and Transformed WHO.

 

Keynote speakers and various plenary session allow us to look backward and forward on the work done and proposed the roadmap to strengthen the field epidemiology capacity building, individual FETP program, graduates, the regional network and global Network in terms of quality and sustainability.

 

The oral presentation was divided into 11 themes as follows: Animal Health, Anti-Microbial Resistance and Health care Related Topics, Award Eligible presentation, Chronic Disease and Injury, Infections transmitted through food and water, Maternal and Child Health, Occupational and Environment Health, Public Health Surveillance, and Viral Hepatitis B and HIV.

 

From the EMR region, 16 oral presentation were accepted, thirteen of them presented from: Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia, while 3 oral presentation were accepted but not presented from Afghanistan and Yemen. Also, 13 poster presentations from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. The presenter from Iraq and Yemen’s abstract was accepted.

 

At the closing ceremony two Field Epidemiology Training Programs gained accreditation, Morocco and Pakistan. Two from the region won in photo context, Dr. Rania Attia from FETP Egypt won the fourth place and Dr. Muhammad Bashir from FELTP Pakistan won the second place.
