FETP Afghanistan Conducts Residents Screening Workshop

The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan (MoPH) and the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) Afghanistan conducted a five-day screening workshop at the National Public Health Institute (NEOC) in Kabul between February 9 and 13, 2019, aimed at selecting residents to join the intermediate FETP Afghanistan. It was attended by 43 residents from different provinces in Afghanistan (Kabul, Kandahar, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Hirat, Kunar, Balkh and Jawzjan) as well as FetP Afghanistan steering committee members.

 

This workshop was a step to complete the process of selecting 25 residents to join the intermediate FETP Afghanistan program. The selected residents will be trained within 15 high risk provinces for EPI and Polio alongside employees from MoPH and the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL).

 

Conducted in both Pashto and English, the workshop’s agenda comprised practical sessions, presentations and group discussion that covered the basics of epidemiology, public health, surveillance systems, outbreak investigations, surveillance data quality and problem solving.

 

For the selection process the workshop, instructors and facilitators conducted daily quizzes, pre and post training assessments, and they also asked participants to write letters of interest to assess their English proficiency. Those procedures will be used to fulfil the selection process alongside the acceptance criteria set for the program.

 

The steering committee will then decide and approve the selected candidates, while taking into consideration the provinces included and candidates’ efficiency.
