GHD/EMPHNET Participates in GAVI Leadership, Management and Coordination Stakeholders Workshop

GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, is supporting health systems in strengthening immunization through building the institutional capacity of GAVI-eligible countries in terms of Leadership, Management, and Coordination (LMC). The LMC support is one of the strategic enablers of Gavi’s 2016-2020 strategy. It aims to strengthen capacities through enhancing management of Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) management and creating a functioning coordination forum such as the Interagency Coordination Committee (ICC) /Health Sector Coordination Committee (HSCC) or any equivalent body and National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) functionality.

 

As one of the LMC partners, GHD|EMPHNET participated in a high-level Gavi Leadership, Management and Coordination (LMC) stakeholders’ workshop on early learning between February 13 and 14, 2019.

 

Over the two days, a highly interactive workshop was held with several presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions, and group work. The workshop witnessed the participation of the LMC partners including Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Sabin Vaccine Institute, Yale University, Dalberg Global Development Advisors, Acasus, and representatives from seven GAVI eligible countries.

 

Participants concluded that, at this point of the LMC implementation, there are some early experiences that could be assessed.

 

The first area is enhanced EPI performance management practices through the strategic use of data to identify concrete program bottlenecks and address these using technology-driven tools and review forums.

 

The second area is sustaining ICC strengthening. This could be done through enhancing understanding of ICC at the levels of ministries, organizations, and multi-sector partners. GHD|EMPHNET is one of the LMC partners who successfully completed the provision of technical support to Sudan.

 

The third area is supporting National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG). Support to NITAGs is provided through the WHO, and progress has been made in the establishment and functionality of NITAGs in Gavi supported countries. Today, 31 out of 56 Gavi supported countries have established a NITAG and 16 of these meet the WHO criteria of functionality.

 

As immunization programs are growing and getting more complex with different cohorts and more antigens, there is a need to invest more on people and LMC would be instrumental to meet these expectations.
