GHD/EMPHNET Supports FETP Afghanistan Mentors Workshop

Afghanistan is starting its own first in-country Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) as an intermediate (one-year) program. Although Afghanistan had a joint program with Tajikistan in the past (Afghan-Tajik FETP) and there were a number of graduates from similar programs in neighboring counties, this dedicated in-country FETP for Afghanistan is a success for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and its health system. This training program will be hosted and conducted by the Afghanistan National Public Health Institute (ANPHI). Several MoPH departments are involved in providing joint oversight to the program implementation.

For this program, GHD|EMPHNET and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan and FETP Afghanistan, conducted a three-day mentors’ workshop in Jordan between January 27 and 31, 2019, for enhancing the educational experiences of FETP graduates and residents. The workshop was attended by twenty mentors from different provinces of Afghanistan: Ghazni, Hirat, Kabul, Kandahar, Kunar, Nangarhar, Balkh and Jawzjan, along with members of steering committee for FETP of Afghanistan.

The workshop started with an opening ceremony. Executive Director of GHD|EMPHNET Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour welcomed the participants and expressed his commitment to support Afghanistan FETP. The ceremony was also addressed by the Advisor to the Minister on Emergency and Preparedness and Response (MoPH) Dr. Robert Fontaine and Dr. Maureen Martinez from CDC, Atlanta. All speakers shared their commitment to implement and sustain the FETP in Afghanistan.

The three-day workshop was a step in establishing the new FETP in Afghanistan. Its main objective was to prepare the facilitators and mentors to support the training of the FETP residents.

Facilitated by CDC and GHD|EMPHNET, the workshop consisted of both practical sessions and presentations that covered the characteristics of good mentorship practices. It also discussed the surveillance data quality and audit, data analysis, the role and responsibilities of the mentors.

Those events included also practical sessions that discussed the Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for facilitating case studies.

The third day discussed the global polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in Afghanistan highlighting the AFP Surveillance main process, with a focus on Afghanistan’s polio platforms clarifying their roles.
