GHD/EMPHNET Supports Workshop on Curriculum Development for FETP-V in Bangladesh

To develop the curriculum for the Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (FETP-V) in Bangladesh, the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) conducted a working group consultation workshop between April 19 - 20, 2019.

Held in Dhaka, the workshop was supported by GHD|EMPHNET. Its participants represented the DLS; Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock; Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR); the International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b); Bangladesh Agricultural University; Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute; Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University; EcoPublic Health Foundation; and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

The workshop was commenced by a short inaugural session presided by DLS Director Dr. Md Ainul Haque. Also in attendance was the Vice Chancellor of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University who was present as a Chief Guest. The ceremony was also attended by the Director of IEDCR and consultant at the icddrb Prof. Mahmudur Rahman. During the inauguration, Dr. Sharmin Chowdhury, the Director of the One Health Institute gave a brief welcome address which was followed by a presentation highlighting the output of the last stakeholders’ workshop given by Prof Nitish Debnath.

The vice chancellor of CVASU mentioned that CVASU is acting as the center of excellence in Bangladesh and that it is happy to be part of the FETP-V program implemented through the One Health Institute. He also added that the course curriculum needs to reflect the field expectation in order to fulfill the demand of epidemiological services in Bangladesh.

Participants recommended that their working groups’ outcomes be refined and reviewed virtually by the respective members of each group. Furthermore, the participants recommended that a small group exercise be conducted based on the principle of “think, shrink and converge” on the whole curriculum for the purpose of identifying overlapping and repetition and suggesting integration where necessary.

To finalize the curriculum and to prepare teaching and learning guidelines before the validation workshop, another session of the working group will be organized. Afterwards, three Interdependent international reviewers will be assigned to review the curriculum developed. This curriculum will then be sent to the Steering Committee meeting for approval.
