Flood-Induced Public Health Emergency Puts Sudan at High Risk: An Urgent call for the International Community

Since July 2020, Sudan has been challenged by the devastating flooding both from heavy rainfall and the water overflow from the River Nile and its tributaries, the White and Blue Nile. By the first week of September, the flood reached an unprecedented level in over 150 years and the nation has announced a state of emergency for the next three months.

 

As of September 6th, all 18 states of Sudan have been impacted by the flood; 108 localities and 397 residential areas have been affected. In total, 55,054 families have been affected, either partially or totally by the floods. It has also been reported that 5,812 animals have died due to the floods. Cumulatively, the Federal Ministry of Health has reported 65 deaths and 1017 injuries attributed to the floods. The states suffering the most are North Darfur, Kassala, Sennar, and Blue Nile states. A total of 19 health facilities have been affected which jeopardizes the provision of health services in these areas, mainly West Kurdufan and River Nile states. However, the media reported higher figures. The risk of flood-induced public health emergencies is high.

 

GHD|EMPHNET calls upon the international community to support efforts needed urgently to alleviate the catastrophic impact of the flood. The Federal Ministry of Health is collaborating with national and international non-governmental organizations and UN agencies in three main domains, namely, health promotion, vector control, and wash, hygiene and sanitation (WaSH) activities. The urgent need is for the provision of shelters, food, and safe drinking water. First aids kits, medicines, mobile/temporary clinics, and vaccines are in high demand. To reduce the risk of water-borne and vector-borne diseases, the urgent need is for the chlorine tabs and powder, mosquito bed nets, and insecticides. The Federal Ministry of Health and states look for supporting their activities to promote health through health campaigns, dissemination of health messages through various media and tools.
