Regional Workshop Held to Position Immunization in Universal Health Coverage Policies and Strategies

The third target of the Sustainable Development Goal (3) “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-​being for all at all ages” links immunization to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) with its emphasis on the provision of safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential vaccines for all. As one of the main services provided at the level of primary health care (PHC), a cornerstone towards achieving UHC, immunization is also linked to UHC under the Immunization Agenda's 2030 Strategic Priority (1). In the context of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) where there are several health problems attributed to immunization issues, protection of health by immunization remains a priority that must be made available to all under UHC.

 

To support the development of concrete plans for positioning immunization in UHC in selected EMR countries, GHD|EMPHNET held a regional workshop between Jun 30 and July 1, 2021, in Amman, Jordan. Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) managers and PHC directors attended from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF whose representatives participated with presentations on the Immunization Agenda 2030 with focus on UHC in the global perspective, immunization financing and UHC, and immunization through a life-course approach. From the participating countries, some shared their experiences on the positioning of immunization in UHC:

 

  1. Afghanistan: Private sector’s role in enhancing immunization and UHC
  2. Egypt: Enhancing health information systems to reach every child by vaccination
  3. Iraq: Sectors’ influence on health systems’ outcomes
  4. Sudan: Policy brief development for immunization and UHC

 

As part of the workshop's program, participants discussed reviews conducted on immunization positioning in UHC-related policies and strategies in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Sudan. Recommendations were made, specifically on developing national plans and identifying needed technical support. Following these discussions and in group work, all participating countries drafted specific priority activities to support accelerating immunization positioning within their national UHC policies and strategies.
