EMPHNET Contributes to the Global Efforts in Strengthening Field Epidemiology with the One Health Approach

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment, including ecosystems, are closely linked and interdependent. Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) have been critical in developing capacities and applying epidemiological knowledge, skills, and competencies in the surveillance of and response to urgent health challenges.

 

Recognizing the importance of the One Health approach in field epidemiology, EMPHNET collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as a technical advisory group (TAG) member organization. Together, they developed the “Competencies for One Health Field Epidemiology (COHFE)” framework and training material. These joint consultative efforts began in mid-2021 and continued till early 2023. As a result of this collaboration, the COHFE framework and supplemental manuals have been successfully developed. These resources will serve as a standard for evaluating and improving field epidemiology programs globally.  

 

The COHFE Framework

The COHFE framework defines the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for field epidemiologists to implement the One Health approach.

 

This framework aligns with the objectives outlined in the Quadripartite's One Health Joint Plan of Action (2022-2028), supporting the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) of 2005, and the Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway.

 

This strategic alignment reinforces the global commitment to addressing health challenges through a comprehensive One Health perspective. Below are the resources developed through this global joint effort.
