Sudan Leads the Way in the Eastern Mediterranean Region with Malaria Vaccine Introduction, Backed by EMPHNET’s Support

4 November 2024, Port Sudan, Sudan – Sudan marks a historic milestone as the first country in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region to incorporate the malaria vaccine into its routine immunization program, a decisive step towards combating one of the nation’s most pervasive health threats. This significant achievement was celebrated in Gadarif and Blue Nile states, where an initial phase of the program—supported by EMPHNET, WHO, UNICEF, and Gavi in collaboration with Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health—aims to protect more than 148,000 children under the age of 12 months from malaria.

The launch, which took place at a media conference attended by high-ranking officials—including Sudan’s Federal Minister of Health, the Gadarif state governor, and representatives from Kassala and Gezira—was a platform to reaffirm Sudan’s and its partners’ commitment to advancing public health. EMPHNET, as a key partner, delivered a speech underscoring the nation’s established malaria control initiatives, which include vector control, early detection, and effective case management, and it emphasized the essential role of the malaria vaccine in reducing malaria mortality among young children.

Baby Aden Mohammad Khaleel receives the first malaria vaccine dose in Sudan, a historic milestone in protecting children from malaria across the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Representing EMPHNET, Senior Technical Specialist Dr. Nada Ahmed highlighted Sudan’s experience in malaria control and lauded the introduction of the malaria vaccine as a critical addition to ongoing efforts. “This vaccine not only strengthens Sudan’s existing malaria interventions but also improves health equity, ensuring that those in high-burden areas receive life-saving protection. This initiative, while cost-effective, also has long-term potential to reduce healthcare costs associated with malaria hospitalizations, a leading cause of admissions in Sudan,” Dr. Ahmed noted.

EMPHNET, committed to supporting Sudan’s Ministry of Health in the program’s rollout, is providing critical technical assistance to enhance vaccine delivery and outreach. The launch event continued with a symbolic vaccination of a young child at a local health facility, marking the official start of Sudan’s malaria vaccination program. A public celebration followed, drawing community leaders, NGOs, and UN partners to honor this achievement.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Nada reiterated EMPHNET’s ongoing support and highlighted the resilience of Sudan’s health system, which has shown adaptability even amid challenging conditions. The introduction of the malaria vaccine amidst ongoing crises exemplifies Sudan’s dedication to protecting public health, while laying the groundwork for a future free from malaria’s burden.
