Supporting Sudan: EMPHNET’s Initiative to Address Health Challenges and Needs Amid Armed Conflict

In light of the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan and its resulting humanitarian crisis, EMPHNET has taken proactive steps to better address the public health situation on the ground and to identify key needs and priorities. A delegate of experts from EMPHNET’s Public Health Emergency Management Center (PHEMC) embarked on a mission to Sudan from May 10-17, 2024.

The objective of this mission was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current health challenges and humanitarian needs emerging from the conflict. Additionally, it sought to explore the areas where EMPHNET can provide support and advocacy in response to this situation.

During their visit, EMPHNET’s delegation met with the Minister of Health, Dr. Heitham Awadalla, at the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) to discuss the organization’s Support Plan for Sudan, and its alignment with the ministry’s needs and priorities. They also explored avenues for advocacy efforts, including the possibility of organizing a forum aimed at supporting and strengthening the health sector in Sudan.

Moreover, other meetings were held with various departments of the FMoH, including the General Directorate of Health Emergencies and Epidemics Control (HEEC),  Kassala State Ministry of Health (MoH), the Public Health Lab, the National Medical Supply Fund, and the Sudan Field Epidemiology Training Program (Sudan FETP). Discussions with the FETP teams centered on supporting the career development of FETP fellows, exploring the possibility of training more cohorts.

In these meetings, they explored potential areas for collaboration such as Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) management, epidemic control, as well as supporting Primary Healthcare Centers (PHC) and operational research, among others. The delegate also visited the Internally Displaced Populations’ (IDPs) gathering points to show support and explore how EMPHNET can assist with the health care for those in need.

EMPHNET’s delegation also met with key partners in Sudan, particularly, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). These meetings paved the way for aligned strategies and projects that will be put in practice.

In conclusion, EMPHNET will continue its support to Sudan, strengthening its partnership with the MoH and other partners in order to enhance public health outcomes and address the pressing needs arising from the ongoing conflict.
