EMPHNET Leads High-Level Visit to Support Sudan’s Health System

In August, EMPHNET’s Director of Public Health Emergency Management Center, Dr. Haitham Bashier, visited several states across Sudan as part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the rebuilding of the country’s health system and advance humanitarian initiatives aligned with Sudan’s current priorities. A key highlight of the mission was the arrangements for the reopening of EMPHNET’s office in Khartoum, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to strengthening local health programs and services, while supporting the overall recovery of the health sector.

During his visit, Dr. Bashier held high-level discussions with His Excellency Dr. Heitham Mohammad Ibrahim, Federal Minister of Health, and other senior officials, emphasizing EMPHNET’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health to support the sustainable development of Sudan’s health system, as well as initiatives that enhance the professional capacities of health workers and improve access to essential services. He also met with representatives from various academic and public health institutions, including the University of Health Sciences and the Sudanese American Physicians Association, to explore opportunities for collaboration and capacity building.

A key highlight of the mission was Dr. Bashier’s engagement with the Blue Nile National Institute for Communicable Diseases, a University of Gezira-affiliated research and public health institution. During the visit, he presented EMPHNET’s initiatives and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the institute, creating a framework for joint academic programs, training courses, postgraduate studies, workshops, research collaborations, and the exchange of expertise. In Kassala State, Dr. Bashier also met with the Director of the national Essential Program on Immunization (EPI) and senior staff to follow up on ongoing joint projects.

The visit also coincided with EMPHNET’s 15th anniversary, highlighting the organization’s enduring commitment to serving vulnerable populations and strengthening health systems in fragile contexts. It builds on EMPHNET’s previous efforts in Sudan, including support for the EPI, enhancing community engagement, introducing new vaccines, and building the capacity of frontline health workers, among other. Together, these initiatives aim to deliver tangible improvements in public health and humanitarian services across the country.
