The UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award is an annual humanitarian recognition given to an individual or group who devote their lives to supporting refugees and displaced people. The winner receives a monetary prize and a media platform to shine a light on their work and the people they help.
For this award, one can nominate any individual, group of people, or organization that has displayed extraordinary humanitarian work on behalf of refugees, displaced, or stateless peoples. However, former and current NRC staff or UNHCR staff, including United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) working for UNHCR offices, are ineligible. Self-nominations are strongly discouraged.
Nominations are evaluated based on the following criteria:
- The deed for which the person/ entity is nominated should take place outside the framework of normal professional duties and go beyond the call of duty;
- It should demonstrate courage;
- It should raise awareness for displaced people
- It should reflect the values of UNHCR.
Nominations should be submitted before February 8, 2018
