    GHD/EMPHNET Participates in the Seventh Regional Stakeholders Meeting to Review the Implementation of the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR)

    Between December 18 and 20, 2018, in Kuwait City, Kuwait, GHD/EMPHNET participated in the Seventh Regional Stakeholders Meeting to Review the Implementation of the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR). Participants in this meeting were representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), member countries in WHO Office for Eastern Mediterranean Region, the IHR Regional Assessment Commission (IHR/RAC), and international organizations.

    The meeting introduced the regional strategic directions contributing to the global target of “1 billion more people protected from health emergencies” as well as the regional strategic plan for improving public health preparedness and response. Furthermore, participants discussed country utilization of the IHR-Monitoring and Evaluation Framework and reviewed progress in developing the National Action Plan for Health Security. Countries also shared IHR-implementation experiences.

    The event agenda included presentations on WHO Global Program of Work 13, IHR Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, national IHR Focal point communication and coordination, national action planning for health security, One Health initiatives in the region, points of entry and cross border collaborations, risk communication, all hazards preparedness, and five-year regional strategic plan for preparedness and response. The meeting also included a poster session for countries to share practices in IHR implementation.

    GHD/EMPHNET provided technical input during the group discussions related to adapting regional strategies to contribute to meeting the 2nd billion global target. The input focused on enhancing the regional risk communications-strategy and finalizing the five-year regional strategic plan for preparedness and response. Moreover, GHD/EMPHNET connected with participating representatives from international organizations and regional countries.
