In collaboration with Abt Associates and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), EMPHNET is conducting a two-year study into the burden of influenza between both hospitalized and non-ill infants in Jordan. For research assistants, nurses, and doctors assigned to implement the study, EMPHNET conducted a refresher workshop on November 1-2, 2016 at Al-Bashir Hospital in Amman.
In sessions facilitated by a team of experts from Al- Bashir Hospital and EMPHNET, the workshop’s twelve participants were updated on the study background and objectives. They were also trained on the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) software and on the implementation and management of data collection procedures. These included interviewing parents, filling forms, abstracting data from medical records, following-up on patients, and collecting blood and oropharyngeal swabs. Moreover, the workshop participants conducted a pilot study to test the REDCap forms before implementation on real data.
The study is part of a project designed to determine the burden of influenza among infants less than one-year-old in three other countries: Albania, Nicaragua, and the Philippines. The objective of the study is to offer a better understanding of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections among infants before introducing or expanding influenza vaccinations and a RSV vaccine in these low-to-moderate resource settings. The study also aims to compare data across these countries.
