Statement by the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network on the Annual Global Week for Actions on NCDs

As we mark this year's Action on NCDs Week, it is imperative to reflect upon the global and regional health landscapes and recognize the importance of addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in our ongoing pursuit of better health outcomes.

NCDs stand as the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), the situation is particularly alarming, with the region witnessing the highest rate of premature mortality due to one of the four main NCDs, standing at an alarming 24.5%. Unfortunately, progress in addressing this critical issue lags behind that of all other regions, underscoring the pressing need for immediate and concerted action.

Since its inception, EMPHNET has been deeply invested in the fight against NCDs in the EMR. We firmly believe in strengthening public health systems and have actively engaged in research and projects that inform policy changes while championing interventions aimed at alleviating the NCD burden. We have supported ministries of health and civil organizations in assessing and planning for evidence-based multisectoral responses in critical areas of NCD, including surveillance, health communication, coalition strengthening, and disease screening and management, among others. Our actions have always been underlined by the spirit of enhancing population health outcomes and transforming the health landscape of the region and beyond.

In our journey forward, the aspiration of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) remains paramount. Every individual deserves access to quality primary healthcare that caters to their needs, ranging from prevention to palliation. To genuinely address NCDs and achieve both UHC and health security, we need to adopt a collaborative approach that extends far beyond the confines of the healthcare sectors. This requires the collective efforts of entire governments, societies, and communities.

Despite NCDs affecting billions, they remain the most underfunded global health challenge. But investing in NCDs offers an unparalleled opportunity. By 2030, we have the potential to drastically save and improve lives globally.

The path ahead is clear: to amplify our efforts, institute comprehensive prevention and management strategies, and stress the urgent need for policy changes that prioritize NCDs and UHC. It's time to #ActOnNCDs.

With unwavering commitment,

Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network
