Statement by the Executive Director of EMPHNET, Dr Mohannad Al Nsour, Recognizing the Work of Field Epidemiologists on World Field Epidemiology Day 2023

To the dedicated members of the public health community, our partners in progress, and all those committed to achieving better health to the people,

On this World Field Epidemiology Day, I wish to underscore the profound importance of Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETP) to the continued health and well-being of our societies. As an FETP alumnus myself, my journey resonates deeply with the spirit of this training and the relentless pursuit of public health excellence that these programs offer.

For us at Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET), our focus on the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) amplifies the role of field epidemiologists. The unique challenges presented by our region, from its varied demographics and health profiles to its diverse socio-political landscape, necessitate an approach that is both grounded in local contexts and aligned with international standards. FETPs in our region are precisely tailored to equip health professionals with the skills and expertise they need to address these challenges head-on.

Our dedication to strengthening public health systems, particularly in the EMR, is unyielding. Every outbreak contained, every health policy refined, and every community educated about disease prevention stands as a testament to the power and potential of field epidemiologists and their work. The successes both we at EMPHNET and public health professionals in the region achieved to date, as well as the challenges we continue to tackle, are a testament to the grit, determination, and expertise of the region’s field epidemiology workforce.

In conclusion, as we mark World Field Epidemiology Day, let's take a moment to celebrate the contributions of all FETP residents and alumni and their critical role in safeguarding public health. The journey ahead may be full of challenges, but with the strength of the training and the passion of our people, I am confident we can surmount any obstacle in our mission for a healthier world.
