Job Description

Surveillance Officer, Respiratory Viruses in Children in Pakistan

 

The aim of this position is to support the implementation of the Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) Sentinel Surveillance and Burden of Disease in Pakistan.

The surveillance officer will be responsible for supporting in-country coordination of the project activities at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Pakistan, providing both operational and technical assistance related to these tasks, overseeing surveillance site operations, ensuring timely and accurate case reporting, and maintaining effective communication between study sites and the central coordination team, in addition to collaborating with country Ministry of Health, sentinel surveillance facilities, and other relevant partners.

 

Scope of Work

The assigned “ Vacancy” will include the following tasks, activities, duties & responsibilities:

  1. Review the respiratory viruses surveillance’ sites in selected areas, including data collection methodologies, available SARI and reporting protocols, laboratory capacity, and case definitions.

  2. Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide the implementation of respiratory virus surveillance activities.

  3. Identify training needs for national and local RSV surveillance staff related to RSV sentinel surveillance and burden of disease.

  4. Contribute to the development and refinement of data collection tools for monitoring respiratory disease burden.

  5. Conduct RSV sentinel surveillance data review with in-country partners including site visits to identify and define case definition, population estimates, challenges in data quality, etc.

  6. Finalize dissemination plan with country partners including audience(s) and format(s) for sharing RSV burden data.

  7. Conduct relevant training related to RSV sentinel surveillance and RSV burden of disease estimation to national and local (as needed) respiratory sentinel surveillance staff.

  8. Submit RSV burden of disease analysis protocol to NIH and GHD|EMPHNET for national approvals.

  9. Develop Data Analysis Plan in collaboration with NIH and GHD|EMPHNET.

  10. Provide ongoing (monthly) monitoring of RSV surveillance data to ensure adequate and high-quality RSV case-based data.

  11. Support the collection and management of data on the proportion of children from the catchment population who attend sentinel sites (e.g. Hospital Admission Survey) and catchment population.

  12. Complete RSV burden of disease estimates.

  13. Facilitate dissemination of RSV burden of disease estimations through governmental (e.g., NITAG) and manuscript development.

  14. Perform any other duties assigned by the NIH and GHD|EMPHNET in alignment with the objectives of the surveillance program.

  15. Review the respiratory viruses surveillance’ sites in selected areas, including data collection methodologies, available SARI and reporting protocols, laboratory capacity, and case definitions.

  16. Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide the implementation of respiratory virus surveillance activities.
