Over the last decade, the Eastern Mediterranean Region has suffered armed conflict, natural disasters, and political instability which resulted in public health emergencies that further burdened public health systems. In the face of these potential emergencies, our region, however, has great potential to strengthen preparedness and response capacities through well-coordinated mechanisms led by public health professionals, field epidemiologists, and members of rapid response teams.

To realize this potential, countries exert efforts to reduce the risks of public health emergencies. And GHD|EMPHNET is contributing to these efforts. Through its Public Health Emergency Management Center, PHEMC, GHD|EMPHNET aims to strengthen regional and national preparedness and response capacities to reduce morbidities and mortalities during public health emergencies and disease outbreaks.

Through the center’s operational procedures and technical inputs, GHD|EMPHNET worked with the countries towards supporting well-coordinated efforts among stakeholders- in alignment with the national governments’ policies and strategic directions- to ensure optimal, comprehensive, and timely response tailored to countries’ priorities. PHEMC also supported building the capacities of many countries in the region in surveillance and alert systems, risk communication, incident management, data and information management, and intersectoral coordination management mechanisms.

Contributions

Launching the Rapid Response Teams Initiative

Joining Global Response to Major Emergencies in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Trained over 1000 emergency rapid responders from the region who contributed to strengthening public health emergency response efforts in their countries to many outbreaks and where they built rapid response capacity at the sub-national level.

As a member of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, deploying public health professionals from its network into seven different countries in support of disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

Number of rapid responders trained were 158 in Egypt, 93 in Iraq, 63 in Jordan, 23 Libya, 319 in Sudan, 91 in Tunisia, 30 in the UAE, with 183 participating in regional training.
