Public Health Emergency Management

Through our Public Health Emergency Management Center (PHEMC), we work towards building strong and competent health systems with adequate emergency management capacities. This will enable countries to better prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks.

PHEMC has long-standing relationships with countries in the EMR and remains committed to working closely with Ministries of Health (MOHs), National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs), and other key health and non-health partners, aiming to strengthen national capacities to prevent, mitigate, and rapidly detect and respond to public health emergencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, trained professionals, including Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), played a substantial role in contributing to the public health response efforts, which has resulted in the scaling up of alert and response activities in their countries.

We also aim to enhance the implementation of priority strategies and actions to improve International Health Regulations (IHR) and Global Health Security (GHS) capacities. Recognizing the importance of sustainable and integrated systems over ad hoc actions, we work to support countries in building resilient health systems that are well-equipped to respond to any public health challenge.
