Center of Excellence for Applied Epidemiology

The center builds workforce capacity in field epidemiology, conducts operational research, promotes knowledge exchange and networking, and develops innovative solutions to improve public health outcomes.

In 2015, GHD|EMPHNET established the Center of Excellence for Applied Epidemiology tp build capacities in applied epidemiology and to support Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in Eastern Mediterranean countries through its FETP network, EMPHNET. Its strategic goal is to lead and advance applied epidemiology in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Over a period of five years, the center grew to support applied and operational research, build capacity in field epidemiology by implementing FETP's different modalities, develop technological solutions to promote high quality and real time data collection, and expand knowledge and experience exchange.

Field Epidemiology Training Programs

Since their launch in 1980 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in their three modalities: two-year (Advanced), one-year (Intermediate), or three-month (Frontline), have produced skilled epidemiologists who mostly work within ministries of health to strengthen surveillance systems and response to public health threats. These programs run under the learning by doing modality where around 75% of the learning process within these programs occurs in the field. These programs are also adapted to their host country's context.
