The Field Epidemiology Training Program of Iraq was first established in its advanced modality, a two-year postgraduate program affiliated with the University of Baghdad and the Baghdad College of Medicine. The program focuses on strengthening the national public health workforce in response to priority health problems, use of evidence-based data for decision making, communication of epidemiologic information, and evaluation of surveillance systems. The program offers didactic as well as field training within various departments of the Ministry of Health in areas relevant to disease detection, outbreak investigation, response to public health threats, disease surveillance, public health programs evaluation, and use of data for decision making.
Achievements
- Contributing to over 60 investigations of outbreaks of different communicable, non-communicable, environmental, and occupational incidents
- Supporting capacity building in bioethics, scientific presentation, and data management, with over 90 protocol-based projects conducted
- During COVID-19, conducting need assessments, surveillance evaluations, providing support at points of entry, contact tracing, and issuing weekly epidemiological COVID-19 reports
