At the Center of Excellence for Applied Epidemiology, the Workforce Capacity Unit contributes to workforce development with a focus on strengthening field epidemiology capacities to enable public health workers to prevent, detect, and respond effectively and rapidly to health threats. Collaborating with partners, GHD|EMPHNET supports Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) by building countries’ capacity in preventing and detecting disease outbreaks. Such activities include enhancing competencies in field epidemiology by improving scientific writing skills, establishing FETPs, technically supporting countries’ FETPs, enhancing surveillance and epidemic investigations in countries, and reinforcing those capacities that can promote the One Health Approach.
Supporting Scientific Writing
This support helps build the writing capacities of FETP professionals for generating case studies, scientific papers, scientific reports, abstracts, and manuscripts which GHD|EMPHNET also supports in disseminating to contribute knowledge sharing. As part of this support, GHD|EMPHNET also uses Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) in the region.
Developing E-learning for FETPs
And for this reason, and as a regional public health organization, GHD|EMPHNET is investing in online learning to serve public health learners in the Eastern Mediterranean. As part of the support provided by its network of FETPs, EMPHNET, it is creating online learning opportunities for these programs. Thanks to this support, now the 9-month to one-year, intermediate FETP curriculum is available online and so is that of the three-month, basic FETP, known as the Public Health Empowerment Program. Beyond field epidemiology, GHD|EMPHNET also designs and implements other training programs and courses in an online format. Subjects addressed are of priority to the region. These have been included in its recently launched online learning portal where learners are offered free, self-paced lessons and which has been gaining increasing popularity in the region.
Supporting FETPs in the Eastern Mediterranean Region
Through its FETP network, EMPHNET, GHD|EMPHNET provides technical support to FETPs including, program reviewing and provision of mini grants. GHD|EMPHNET also provides logistic support for field activities of surveillance and other epidemiologic activities for the prevention, detection, and response to epidemics and emerging infections.
